1st Ian Damant - 23:55Nikki "Fabian" Juniper struck a blow for the ladies by winning the Tour de Navestock by 8 seconds from the nearest male rider and being one of only two under 12 minutes. A special mention should also go to Louis Modell, who won the Juvenile competition by more than 2 minutes.
In past years we have promoted a 1 lap time trial of the Navestock E14A/10 course to celebrate the Tour de France prologue on the following day. This year ASO have decided that this will be too tough for Alberto, Fabien, Frank, Andy, Brad and the others and the tour will start with a mere 191km Road Race on Saturday. So lets show them how the real men (and ladies) of East London/Essex know how to race.
All are welcome to join us but there will be a limit on the number of starters so get there early to ensure your place. In the event of over-subscription priority will be given to Becontree and ELV members.
Small prizes will be given to the fastest rider overall and in the Veteran, Senior, Junior, Juvenile and Ladies categories, subject to at least 3 riders in the category.
Refreshments will be available as usual, hopefully with a French theme.
The Shaftsbury middlemarkers 25 held on the E2/25 course on Sunday 18 June was nominated as the club championship event for 2011. Gary sends this report of the event.
1st Ian Damant - 1.02.10Battling against a very strong and blustery headwind on the way out, nasty crosswinds on the return leg, plus heavy showers sweeping in during the afternoon, Saturdays Shaftesbury CC middlemarkers 25 Time Trial up on the E2 was not one for the faint hearted, putting bike handling skills and concentration to the test. Out of the 120 riders down to the start only 77 made it to the finish. The remainder either declined to start or did not finish. Gary was the early starter out of the Becontree and posted the fasted time overall in the event for quite a while after a wet start. Ian was off over an hour after, knocking over three minutes from his previous best followed by Tony, both of them having to contend with a heavy shower on the return leg. In the end the it was down to just 6 seconds, making Ian Damant the well deserved 2011 25 Mile TT Champion.
On a very windy day, Gary recorded a fine 1:00:53 in the ECCA 25 held on the E2/25 course on 5 June. The race was won by Peter Balls, West Suffolk Wheelers with a time of 53.23.
Tony Capon won the Handicap first prize in the Lea Valley 10 mile Time trial held on the E2 course on 14 May. His time was 26:47, with a handicap of 16:51.
Ian Damant is the 2011 Heffer Memorial champion, exactly 80 years after his great uncle Cecil won the same trophy in 1931.

Peter Lifford, our representative from north of the M25 sent news of his recent Grass Track win.
This weekend saw the start of my racing season with the first two grass track events of the year. The first event was at Carlisle, about as far north as you would want to go before getting to Scotland, resulting in my first (and hopefully not last win of the season) in the 1500m handicap. The track at Carlisle wasn't the flattest with an interesting little hill in the final bend before the finish line.
The next day I was riding at Richmond (Yorkshire not Surrey) on a much faster, smooth, banked grass track where due to my lack of speed and some very dubious handicapping I had no placings.
If you have not heard of grass track, take one track bike, like they use at Manchester, put some slightly knobbly tyres on it, find a largish area of grass, mark out a track of around 300m and then race.
If you want to go and watch and even have a go, the
Easterley are holding an event at The Brentwood Centre on 27 June.
Gary Tyrrell takes the first trophy of 2010 with a convincing win in the Heffer Memorial 14 mile TT.
