Race report by Tony Capon

Sunday morning dawned, 4 hopeful Becontree riders made their way to the start of the Elite and Essex Roads interclub event on the E9/25 (the E91/25 course run in reverse from Writtle). Gary was the first man to arrive, reflecting his keenness to “race” closely followed by Tony. Adrian impressed every one by riding to the start from Shenfield train station. Ian arrived in true style; just enough time to get the bike out and start.

For those who had time for a warm-up, it was a case of riding over wet roads that were starting to dry out. As the minuets ticked by the weather improved and so all riders had the benefit of dry roads through out. Gary was the first BWCC man of the line followed by Tony Adrian and Ian as last solo man off. Andy Page and Graham Painter were riding a tandem, breathing fire and nitro-glycerine.

The 12.5 mile ride out to the turn was said to be pretty much uneventful (disregarding the high-end effort being applied by all riders), though when Gary and Tony saw each other (one approaching and the, and the other having negotiated, the turn both thought Tony  was up on Gary; just the sort of spur Gary needed to dole out increased punishment to those pedals. The return journey was gong to catch out the unwary. Both Gary and Tony changed down to the small chain-ring to spin up the steep section a mile or two after the turn, forced by the wind which came from no-where into one’s face as a forceful punch. Neither Ian or Adrian were prepared to disclose their strategy for that stage of the race.

The down hill section to wards the finish was fast despite the head wind. Swooping towards the finish around bend after bend was exhilarating and the section where the wind suddenly had full force to pushed are participants in to the middle of the road was heart-in-mouth-time!

At the finish it was clear And Page and Graham had won by simple reason they had overtaken all BWCC riders (57:08).

So congratulation to Gary ; a good win and congratulations to Adrian who was able to ride a PB, on a sporting course!
